SIte Location Part II

After researching where the major music venues and music learning environments reside within San Diego, the population breakdown of San Diego by its various jurisdictions, and the various methods that population travels by within San Diego, it is clear that the site must be within the Downtown boundaries to reach its ultimate exposure and impact on a local, regional, national, and even international level. Here is a series of charts to explain my research.

Case Study Break Down

Here is a chart of the 4 case studies. I have given some background information and rated each one off their success in my opinion. My goal with this thesis is to create an environment using the best aspects of all four of these to optimize the performance within the environment.

Case Studies 2: Here in San Diego

Case Studies Outside of San Diego Area

3D Collage

Before diving any further into this thesis project, we've been asked to create a conceptual abstraction of the project in the form of a collage. Here I have put it in 3D to add a level of playfulness and interaction, two ideas that I wish to evoke in the final designs. There are a few musical elements, including guitar strings, piano keys, and a hand drum head, allong with some important buildings and art pieces used as inspiration.

Phase 2: Site Location

So now that I've reviewed all I know about this thesis to the class, got great feedback, and gained more interest and motivation to create what could be an amazing project, it is time to find a site. As easy as that sounds, its more advanced than one would think. I have to weigh the pors and cons of placing the facility where there are an abundance of music facilities (venues, lessons, classes, etc) such as downtown or La Jolla, or aim for more of an area that is in dire need of such a community spark? There are several advantages and disadvantages to each such as accessability, space availability, desire to be in the area, competition with other music sites, financial/governmental constraints, the list goes on. My next step is to locate three or four different sites in the lower san diego and compare them. I will also look at four case studies ranging from the Charles Wyly Theater in Dallas Tx, the Ciudad de Musica in Paris, and the Recreational Center for Music here in san diego. BUt unfortunatley for now, I am all but bedridden from some illness I've developed today...There is a slight chance I will not be able to make it to school tommorrow.

Thesis phase 1: Inspiration

I've always told people if I was not in pursuit of an architecture degree, my life would revolve entirely around music, so its easy to see, my thesis for architecture school is on the boundless subject of music and design. Week one has already come and gone, and I am inspired as can be about tackling this project. We've been asked to create a collage of ideas we have about the thesis and I want to start off with a bang, a little burst of momentum rather than slowly picking up speed. A lot of work has been done already, but theres a lot to go. So with that, I'm leaving this and heading back to the drawing table!
